I’ve always liked the seductive qualities of paint and color, and the power of image. The painting process transports me into a state of mind that’s a mixture of consciousness and unconsciousness, a creative feverishness, where I work to make the most of this state, working in the moment. A very physical application, expressive brush stroke, layering, and working in larger scale, enable expression of emotion and feelings. Drawing inspiration all around me, and combining it with my current emotional state, memories, and imagination, I hope to create images that in turn, will evoke emotions in, and move the viewer at some level.
Nature, and everyday life are my inspiration, and challenge a desire, and my growing addiction and need, to express myself through painting. Water, with all its many different emotional states, never ceases to intrigue me, and has always been a favorite theme in my work. The human figure, and portraiture, are other favorite subjects of exploration, both offering many expressive, states of being.
After living and working odd jobs in New York city, Boston, Connecticut, and working as a deck hand, in and around Florida and the Islands for several years, I settled in Boston for a while, where I studied at Massachusetts College of Art, and The Boston Museum School, and discovered painting as a way of communicating and expressing myself. Over the years, I have worked as a Graphic Artist; Illustrator; Commercial Photography Stylist; and worked to lead therapeutic art groups for adults with TBI. I continue to paint as much as possible in my Portland, Maine studio; show work in local galleries and venues; show work in my studio, and do commissioned painting; and offer private painting and drawing instruction in my studio.
